About
Textile Designer
Amsterdam
Samm was a fashion lawyer in London before Brexit happened, then she decided to develop solutions to the issues she saw in the fashion industry. She shares traditional textile techniques which are sustainable and being lost due to generational apathy, digital addictions and fast fashion dependence.
She is now based in Amsterdam where she spins yarn, dyes it with plants and knits the yarn into clothing.
With her project, the New Independent Spinners' Society, she creates a community of self-reliant makers who are taught about natural dyeing with plants, how to spin yarn, how to knit, pattern cut and sew garments together. Lessons are held at in her atelier at De Hoop in Amsterdam. It's a big and wonderful place shared by hundreds of artisans !
Samm recycles pre-made, deadstock yarns into knitwear too. To create inks and dye, she focuses on native and heritage plants which have a historical connection to food, medicine, colour. She is convinced that, by using permaculture principles, we can meet our basic needs from a local collection of plants and textile techniques.
