Welcome to Yuki's workshop! Get ready for a 2-day immersive experience where you'll learn the ancient art of Kintsugi in a modern setting.Â
In kintsugi workshops, you learn a traditional Japanese restoration technique that involves repairing broken bowls with Urushi, a Japanese Lacquer. These mended pieces are then beautifully adorned with gold, silver, and vermilion, transformed into truly unique works of art.
Kintsugi is more than just a craft; it’s a philosophy centered around acceptance and personal growth. By highlighting the scars as a part of the object’s history, Kintsugi symbolizes embracing flaws and imperfections in our own lives. Therefore, this ancient technique serves as a metaphor, teaching us that setbacks can lead us to become even stronger and more beautiful.
In this workshop you'll use a mixture of clay powder (Tonoko) and authentic Japanese lacquer (Ki-Urushi). This traditional technique adds strength and beauty to your piece and is unlike conventional modern kintsugi methods that use only artificial glue. Yuki will also introduce you to e-Urushi (Red Japanese lacquer) for drawing stunning lines as the foundation for golden kintsugi, using the exact same method as the authentic technique. For the final touch, you'll sprinkle gold powder (or brass powder) over the lacquer to create stunning golden lines, transforming your ordinary pottery into a true work of art.
The key difference in the appearance of finished kintsugi pottery between modern and authentic lies in how the gaps are filled. When the gaps are filled beautifully, the reflection of gold is truly stunning. While a 1-Day Kintsugi workshop may only use one layer of natural filling due to time constraints, a 2-Day Kintsugi workshop allows for the creation of multiple layers of fillings. This extra time and effort result in a finished piece that is indistinguishable from authentic kintsugi pottery. For those looking to achieve an authentic appearance, a 2-Day Kintsugi workshop is highly recommended.

Meet Yuki, an artisan with a rich background that informs her craft in unique ways. Originally from Saitama, Japan, Yuki spent ten years interning as a lighting designer in Tokyo before moving to Australia. There she spent seven years working in anatomical pathology.
In 2019, Yuki moved to the Netherlands with her family, where she developed a strong interest in European architecture and culture. This newfound appreciation for cultural heritage, combined with her Japanese roots, led her to specialise in traditional techniques such as Kintsugi and Maki-e.
Today, Yuki offers workshops in cities such as Amsterdam, Delft, Groningen, Rotterdam, Utrecht and France. She also offers team-building activities for universities, companies and Japan-related events.
