Join Clunie for an immersive woodcarving workshop.
You'll start with an introduction to Clunie and her workshop, learning about her background and the history of classical woodcarving before a health and safety induction.
Clunie will demonstrate the essential tools and techniques of woodcarving and you'll get hands-on practice with basic skills. You'll learn about wood properties, including grain direction, which is important for effective carving and be supplied with timber suitable for your project and a document detailing what was learned during the course, as well as details of tools and timber suppliers.
The workshop concludes with a practical project in which you'll create a chip carving pattern.

Note: No prior carving experience is necessary. Complete beginners will be guided through the basic techniques, while more advanced students will be given guidance on how to refine their skills further. Experienced woodcarvers wishing to be set a more complex project should get in contact after booking.Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult who will be responsible for their wellbeing.

Practical information
You may bring any additional carving tools you wish to use, clearly marked with your name. Pack a lunch to enjoy nearby or visit the local shops and cafes a short walk from the studio. Note that participants are asked to leave the studio during the lunch break.
Please wear sturdy, covered shoes—leather boots or safety work boots are strongly encouraged. Open-toed shoes or sandals are not allowed. Dress appropriately for a workshop environment, in clothes you don't mind getting dusty, dirty, or covered in wood chips.
This course involves carving in a standing position during the course hours. Please bear in mind the physical demands of this when booking. A stool can be made available on special request, but please email prior to booking.
Don't forget to bring a notebook and pencil to jot down notes and ideas.
Meet Clunie Fretton, an award winning, classically trained sculptor, master carver and gilder. Her work is held in prestigious collections including St George's Chapel Windsor, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Houses of Parliament and various churches and cathedrals throughout the UK. Clunie was also the master woodcarver on the Sky Arts television series "Bill Bailey's Master Crafters".
Renowned for her precision, depth of knowledge and creative approach, Clunie is dedicated to both creating art and teaching others. Her studio serves as a hub for both her artistic endeavors and workshops, offering visitors the opportunity to learn the art of woodcarving.
