Your journey begins with an introduction to the art of letter carving. Wayne has extensively studied this subject and shares his insights into the techniques and fascinating history behind the age-old craft.
As the workshop unfolds, participants will be presented with printouts showing various typography styles. Inspired by these styles, both modern and traditional, you'll choose one that resonates most with your vision.
Next, you'll start the process of bringing your chosen letter to life. Guided by Wayne, you'll sketch the letter on paper, carefully studying its shape and form. With your new gained confidence, you'll transfer your design onto the stone, either freehand or with the help of a stencil, ensuring perfect attention to detail.
With a hammer and chisel, it's time to start the transformative skill of carving! You will gradually shape and refine your letter, enjoying the satisfaction as your design comes together. Under Wayne's watchful eye, you'll learn how to carefully control the tools, improving your skills with each stroke.
Letter carving is a meticulous art that requires time and patience. During the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to create one or two letters, ensuring a focus on quality and mastery. The morning will be dedicated to the drawing process, then you will experience the skill of carving in the afternoon.

Wayne Hart, an award-winning artist based in Hertfordshire, specialises in hand-drawn and hand-carved lettering in stone and wood. With a background in graphic design and a specialism in typography, from the University of Reading, this talented artisan brings a fresh perspective to the world of three-dimensional design.
Drawing inspiration from the ancient craft of stone letter carving, Wayne honed his skills under the tutelage of the renowned Pip Hall, dedicating three years to perfecting this unique art form during an apprenticeship. Venturing even further, Wayne took a transformative journey to Italy, where he found his passion for wood carving, adding another layer of depth to his art form.
Wayne has worked on many prestigious commissions, including the C S Lewis memorial at Westminster Abbey and a public art project in Amiens, France. Wayne's passion extends beyond his physical creations, as he also lectures in Type Design at the University of Reading.
Wayne's talents have not gone unnoticed, he was awarded the prestigious Craft & Design Magazine's Gold Award in Specialist Media and the esteemed title of Craft Maker of the Year.
